There are patients I will always remember. John and Anwar are two of them. For more than seven years, John lived with three painful scalp and neck conditions. -Acne Keloidalis Nuchae, also called AKN or severe razor like bumps on the back of the head. -Dissecting Cellulitis, the draining and tender boils that keep coming back. -Cutis Verticis Gyrata, deep folds and ridges on the scalp. These were not simple barber bumps. They were thick, visible scars you could see from far away. The kind of changes that make a person avoid mirrors, delay haircuts, and quietly disappear from parts of their own life. Little by little, John pulled back from friends and family. His world became smaller, and the emotional toll grew heavier. When he arrived at my clinic, the first step was naming what he had. AKN. Dissecting Cellulitis. Cutis Verticis Gyrata. Once a condition has a name, it can also have a plan. I will never forget the look on his face when he realized this was a real disease and not a personal flaw. In that moment, confusion and shame gave way to understanding and hope. This is one of the reasons I created The Bumpinator podcast. In this same episode, we show the closing part of Anwar’s journey. Anwar lived for years with advanced AKN, the same large back of the head bumps many describe as huge razor bumps, barber bumps, keloid bumps, or hard lumps on the neck. What you see here is the later phase of his healing. Less pain. Softer scars. A more natural hairline. A new confidence in how he moves through the world. To Anwar, thank you for allowing us to show the final stage of your recovery. Someone out there is searching for answers about scalp bumps that will not go away, painful boils on the head, or thick neck scars. Through your courage, they can finally see themselves and feel less alone. To John, thank you for trusting me at the beginning of your journey. Your openness and optimism remind all of us to approach life with strength even when it feels hard. In this Bumpinator episode, I talk about the emotional and practical impact of long term scalp disease. I explain why conditions like AKN are often mistaken for simple razor burn at first and then progress into severe bumps and scars. I also discuss treatment approaches that may help selected patients with AKN and similar advanced scalp bump conditions. If you have felt unseen or believe there are no more options, this episode is for you. You are not alone, and there may be more paths forward than you have been told. Watch to hear John at the start of his healing and Anwar near the end of his. Share your thoughts in the comments.
